ChinesePod is happy to announce the release of our first “Word on the Street” podcast. The WOS podcast was published today in the ChinesePod RSS feed along with our daily lesson. Word on the Street is a regular column in City Weekend Magazine – “Beijing and Shanghai’s essential English guide to today’s China”. As any foreigner living in China will tell you, free publications like City Weekend are more than just recreational reading, they are valuable tools that keep you connected with what is happening in the local community.

The Word on the Street column and podcast are the first results of our new partnership with City Weekend. The magazine is published twice monthly and the WOS podcast will be released on the same day City Weekend hits news stands around China. Word on the Street is not the first time City Weekend has dipped it’s toe into the podcasting sea. They have also been experimenting with the medium. More information can be found on the City Weekend website – www.cityweekend.com.cn.

So what is Word on the Street?

Word on the Street is an attempt to use popular language as a window into modern Chinese society. The “Word” is always highly topical as it has been extracted from China’s cultural, social and entertainment media in real time (give or take a week). The usage of the Word is broken down and its’ relevance explained. Like most of the things we do here at ChinesePod, Word on the Street aims to be both informative and entertaining. We have done our job if you learn something new about life in Modern China and have a laugh or two along the way.

And the first Word on the Street is … Fensi 粉丝

The hipster usage of the word 粉丝 is a take on the same word, which actually denotes vermicelli. The modern day take is a phonetic translation of the English word “fans”, indicating a large group of avid supporters. Despite being in the Chinese lexis for some time, mainly the younger generation; 粉丝 has found itself banned from school textbooks. Authorities claim that such a play on words might be misleading and confusing for younger learners, sparking a heated debate on the term in question, along with the evolution of the Chinese language at large.

Sample sentences:

我是NBA的超级粉丝。
Wǒ shì NBA de chāo jí fěn sī。
I am a super fan of the NBA.

章子怡在美国有很多粉丝。
Zhāng zǐ yí zài měi guó yǒu hěn duō fěn sī。
Zhang Ziyi has a lot of fans in the States.

And btw, how do we pull these podcasts, and the news podcasts if we don’t subscribe via the RSS feeds?

AuntySue April 6, 2006 at 3:39 pm

Me three. I tried a web site search. It asked me for my membership login then gave no results?
Oh you guys are such a tease! :-)

AuntySue April 6, 2006 at 3:40 pm

Lantian, what news podcasts?

Maybe I am like a blind pig who finds an acorn. It just came across on i-Tunes with the daily podcast. Nice surprise but Ken and Jenny you are giving us 功課 gōngkè “homework” !

Mike–so, did you get one file or two? That is, does the word on the street podcast come at the end of the promotion podcast or are they two different files in one feed (if that’s possible)?

This tells you I haven’t listened to Promotion yet.

Sandra

It came as two files. At first I was confused. I thought “Promotion” was a commercial for Chinesepod. But no two files. And as I have a PC with i-Tunes at work and an Apple in my apartment, I can tell you I got two files on each today.

Hi probably me being stupid but is there any way to just download this and the other non-mainstream podcasts from the website. I lokked over some of the xml from the rss feeds and tried to download from what looked like links to the mp3 files but my browser just hung.

I tend to use lots of different computers both at home and work and don’t have an IPOD so I usually download stuff I want to listen to by hand.

Perhaps the server has been busy?

You guys are getting better with time. I like the word on the street. It’s like a newbie to Buzzwords’ intermediate. I just hope your two sponsors dont think there’s an identification/crossover/conflict of interest/whatever problem.

I don’t see this file anywhere on the Cpod site?…..

AuntySue April 9, 2006 at 11:40 pm

Me again. I can’t find it again. Still.
The link in the main text above looked hopeful, but it goes to nowhere.

Lantian April 10, 2006 at 12:12 am

Hi AuntySue,

I just clicked on it and it uses my Firefox Quicktime plugin to play the mp3 file. Maybe you can right-click on it, save-as and it’ll save the file?
