Cool! Any iPhone love coming though?
How can we pressure Apple to hurry their review process? This makes me want to forget about the iPhone and use a smart phone that isn’t so heavy handed in their control of what software I’m allowed to install. The iPhone is a great device, but why should Apple dictate what software I can and cannot use? If this were true for laptops people would never stand for it.
May be a silly question, but will the iPhone app that will eventually be approved also work on the iPod Touch?
We are pretty channel-agnostic here so would be happy to develop more if Apple gave us some love. In the meantime, we will keep iterating for other platforms.
@Dave,
No silly questions. My understanding is that our application is for the App Store, so once it gets approved it should be available for both iPhones and iPod touches.
Have been playing around with the ChinesePod app for the last day or two, the flash cards are pretty cool. What I like is how you can choose which language is shown on the front side of the card, and the play option in the menu. The learner has the option to attempt to recall the pronunciation and definition of the word they are looking at (in Chinese Characters in this case), if they still can’t recall the definition and pronunciation they can then hit menu>play to hear the word and thus have a better chance at recalling the definition, thus are better able to test themselves.
One thing I’d like to see is an option to see the ID number of the lesson from which each individual example sentence is taken from in the dictionary.
Pinyin input method is easy: just the word and the tone number – ni3 hao3.
Am looking forward to Android Chinese Input in order to make better use of the ChinesePod tool’s dictionary Chinese input search method.
Overall I’m happy with how things are going with this new app. Great work guys!
Oops.. couple of typos the spellchecker missed there.. oh well
haha
Kind of makes me wish I had an Android enabled phone now!
Pleco is also having problems with Apple, which is really making me regret getting an iPhone (hope someone in apple is reading) I’ll be giving your apple app a go when its released.
Great to enhance the learning via mobile phone. Especially the flashcards are useful when you have some boring waiting time.
I whish there would also a Java application to cover Symbian and Windows CE.
Is the iphone app similar to the android app?
@Bazza,
Yes, they were originally designed the same. Future iterations will likely change that.
I have an apple Itouch. Will the application for the I phone also work for the I touch?
Yes, it will.
You have lost me!
I have no idea what this is really about. My first impression is that to own an iphone is essential. Am I correct?
I have an Acer hand computer with windows etc. installed. Is that compatible?
Why can’t this type of facility be available on site?
Can it be used on the computer?
Sorry I have only questions. But it is important that new devices be explained clearly to poddies who are not computer literate.
Apart form these comments the site has improved a lot recently. The lesson search facility, traditional characters support etc are all much better.
any recommendation what phone to buy for best chinesepod support in the future? I am in Shanghai and I can’t decide between meizu m8, ipod touch, or an android phone…
Any chance of this coming to Blackberry Storm?
Rich,
No immediate plans, but there is no reason why we shouldn’t. I will ask someone to look into it.
I can’t actually believe Apple haven’t pulled their finger out on this yet. Working with people like Chinesepod who are so on the ball should be their main priority instead of flooding the app store with pointless games. I can’t understand why they have let so many shoddy mandarin apps through and are holding the Chinesepod one. I am really looking forward to the day it is released though and thank you thank you Chinesepod, the app looks great, you set the standard for language learning companies.
Can we petition Apple to push it through?
Hi – Where can I get hold of the .apk file to run it on the android emulator?
I looked at the G1 (T-mobile’s Android phone), and it just doesn’t seem to have enough applications developed yet to make it worth taking the plunge.
Is the CP Flashcard App for iPhone available outside of the iTunes store?? If so, I will jailbreak my iTouch just so i can check it out!
tl
Why on earth is the english translation on both the front and back of the card? That defeats the entire purpose of two-sided flashcards! Greatly disappointed in that. It should at LEAST be an option.
Is there a way to look up Chinese characters on the Android app via handwriting recognition? Maybe now that you have joined forces with Skritter which has a Java-based recognizer?
I loved using PlecoDict on Palm and Windows Mobile, but now that I’m switching to Android I’ve realized that there’s no quality alternative :S
I know some C and Java, so if you guys were interested, I could help you out for free as best I can.
Thanks
i was considering an android device for my next purchase, i was wondering about character input, similar to ipod/iphone? i really like the character recognition thay have – is there any plans to support hand writing recognition in the future? (it really helps me to – read, write & hear what i’m learning) also does your dictionary support text to speech (chinese)?
@Andreès,
you can try Google Pinyin or Sogou for mobile (http://pinyin.sogou.com/)
