chinterviewken-and-xiemixedHere’s an audio interview with Dr. Tim Xie, of the Asian and Asian American Studies department, at the University of Long beach, California. (Circa 18 mins.) Dr. Xie is a Shanghai native who has taught Chinese in the US for many years. He runs the Learning Chinese Online website. I think it’s safe to say that Dr. Xie has been a true leader in bringing together technology and the study of the Chinese language.
Dr. Xie usually drops by the ChinesePod factory whenever he’s back in his home town and recently he did just that. In this chat, I ask him about the growing interest in learning Mandarin in the US, the role of technology in learning Chinese, and a host of other issues.

I visited Professor Xie last year in Long Beach. Great interview.
Say… I want to work with you, how can we do that?
interesting interview, worth re-listening to.
the comments about writing characters and typing is pretty interesting and very true. i learnt to recognise 笨蛋 & 白痴 from a chinese friend while chatting on QQ and can instantly recognise them. that recognition has allowed me to remember/figure out other words.
Great to hear again from Prof. Xie. We’ve crossed paths a number of times over the years in various academic settings. Last year at UCLA was the last time we were together. I’ve always appreciated his efforts to bring technology into daily learning of foreign languages. Nice to see that a wider audience is getting to know him too.
The Dr. Xie’s Learning Chinese Online web site is how I found ChinesePod. There are a lot of good references in that site.
Same here as James Theron .. a great recommendation on Prof. Xie’s website led me to ChinesePod and for that alone I am indebted to him.
I am indebted for the link, the site counter just shows how much this man is a born teacher. Cheers
