That is so cool! It was really a must have on Chinesepod.
I have a question though, does it keep track of the results, so words I have problems remembering will show up more often ?
Writing with a mouse is a bit awkward for me. I have not tried a tablet yet, but I’m sure that would be much more satisfying. Has anyone tried Skritter with a tablet PC? It seems like the best approximation to paper would be seeing the character drawn directly underneath a stylus on a touch screen.

I had the same question. I read elsewhere that the feature you are looking for is not in the Lite version of Skritter, but I believe you can go to the Skritter web site for a free trial and play with the full version which does track and react to your progress.
Concerning Skritter, I like it very much especially the MDBG dictionary function. It is great to go to the MDBG with a single click to get the full information about a word. That makes remembering the word much easier.

I have finally got a tablet and it is really great. Much better than the mouse.
One suggestion: maybe it could be possible to make a few selections of lessons and create sets called Skritter 1, Skritter 2… These lessons would be interesting for those wanting to learn writing in a certain order. Each set would have a different level.
The interest on those lessons would be just writing the characters with Skritter, not following the audio, the exercises, etc. You could specify: if you complete Skritter 1, you will learn 100 characters (or whatever); if you complete Skritter 1 to 5, you will learn those corresponding to HSK 1, etc.
Ok John’s blog post explains how to open up Skritter which I’d kinda figured out. Perhaps he could do a follow-up. For example what is the MDBG dictionary (mentioned above) and how do I access it? Also, if I’m learning the character from scratch I’d like the facility to just trace the character a few times before trying to do it from memory. I know there is a prompt but I’d like the option of keeping it turned on so I could practise drawing the character acurately first. Also, could the prompt give each stoke in the correct sequence so I can practise drawing the character in the right order. At the moment my Skritter doesn’t seem to do this.
Francisco, there are vocab sets corresponding to HSK on the main Skritter site. But the writing order isn’t too important, as the progression of lessons on ChinesePod is probably just as good in terms of what to learn.
Paul, try holding down the “Show” button (示) or “S” to see the strokes animated in order. You can hold it down only briefly to get a couple strokes, or you can see the whole character at once.
You can click on the character or word in the prompt to look it up in the MDBG dictionary, although that might change.
You’re right, we don’t have an option to have the character stay on so that you can trace it. We originally had it that way, but even at first it proved remarkably hard to learn it by tracing. I could trace a character a bunch of times and think I was making progress, but nothing stuck. We might eventually make an option to do it that way, as part of a introductory “how to write characters” mode.

Thanks for your comment. In fact, I have decided to subscribe to Skritter (www.skritter.com) in order to have that option. I started with HSK lists, but preferred to move to the vocabulary list of “New Practical Chinese Reader”, which is the book series I am using in my studies with a teacher. In this way, I also want to support you. I am very thankful to you for the development of this tool.
In many cases the new vocabulary of the lessons I am assigned at ChinesePod (Intermediate level) is quite difficult for me to write it. As probably many other people, my writing level is much lower than my reading or speaking level, although now I hope to correct this thanks to Skritter. By following the NPCR list, just after a couple of hours practising, I am already noticing a remarkable progress!
Now, apart from the textbook NPCR 3 and ChinesePod, Skritter has become another important resource for my learning.

Is there any way of getting ChinesePod with Skritter onto Android? There’s no PlecoDict for Android and no Chinese handwriting recognition either, so we’re really aching for a substitute
