Traditional Characters for the ChinesePod iPhone App

The ChinesePod “Learn Chinese” iPhone app now supports traditional characters. To make the switch, you will need to follow these steps:

1. Update your character “Character Set” settings on ChinesePod.com. You can do this from any lesson page by clicking on the little “cog” icon at the top right of the main column. (See images below.)

2. Update to the newest version of the ChinesePod Learn ChinesePod iPhone app.

3. Continue using the app. All newly downloaded (or previously downloaded but newly opened) lessons on the app will display in traditional characters.

Please note that this is newest update will only affect newly downloaded lesson data. Previously downloaded (and opened) lesson data will not be updated. This is because the app doesn’t store both simplified and traditional character simultaneously, since most users only need one, and downloading both sets every time would results in twice the sync time.

An upcoming version of the app will feature both “clear lesson text data” and “clear audio data” buttons in the settings section. That way users that only want traditional characters can clear their lesson text data and redownload it as pure traditional characters. In the meantime, if you absolutely must clear your app of the simplified character data, you can delete the app from your iPhone and then reinstall it. This will also delete all lesson audio downloads, however, so if you don’t want that, we recommend you wait for the next release.

As for you Android users, expect to see similar updates to the ChinesePod Learn Chinese Android app soon!

To John, Jenny, Ken and the entire Chinesepod team,

我只想说,新的Android ChinesePod app 非常非常好。这真有用! Please keep working to improve the mobile version — for me it’s really made daily study possible.

谢谢,
Chris

I can understand that you go with the current iphone hype, but please keep in mind that most users probably are on Symbian OS. Wouldn’t it make sense to support the most common OS’s first?
How about a quick survey amongst the users of what the most wanted platforms are?

“Shiner” is right. Almost half of smart phones are Symbian OS. iPhone is 15% and Android is currently about 5%. Here are the stats I copied from Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbian_OS]:

“In the number of “smart mobile device” shipments, Symbian devices are the market leaders. Statistics published in February 2010 showed that the Symbian devices comprised a 47.2% share of the smart mobile devices shipped in in 2009, with RIM having 20.8%, Apple having 15.1% (through iPhone OS), Microsoft having 8.8% (through Windows CE and Windows Mobile) and Google Android having 4.7% [http://www.canalys.com/pr/2010/r2010021.html]“.

Though I like my I like my (overpriced) iPhone, I think the popular Symbian devices reach more people.

There were several weaknesses in the previous model: 1) It took ages or luck before one could find some of the most common phrases, such as “I speak a little Chinese” or “How do you say [English word] in Chinese”? (Forget “ni hao”). 2) You do need to incorporate reading chinese characters. I have several books based on a series that appeared in The Straits Times of Singapoor that explain characters. 3) Much as Ken was great (my wife is Irish), the minute of talky intro with Jennie was a nuisance (but far superior to Amber’s illiterate talkiness)–sorry to be so blunt, but I’m trying to help your business. I gladly paid $300 for the CD set, by the way, which I still find more convenient than using the web. But it would be nice if you could title the files, so that on an iPhone one could look at the pdf while listening to the lesson.
